Sketch Artists
Not only is it crucial to record the location of the victim's body *assuming the crime was a murder* and the whereabouts of any noticeable, distinguishable items around the room. This includes potential murder weapons, coffee tables, broken coffee mugs, or other items that can help recreate the scene in court. It's all fine and dandy on paper, but it doesn't help give the court a recreation of the scene. This is where a visual representation of the scene comes in handy, which is the job of the Sketch Artists.
Sketch Artists must document the direction each item is facing, is the tip of the knife facing North? Or is it South-West? Each of these directions is crucial for the recreation of the scene in the court room, because failure to do so could be the end of the case. Crime scene artists usually tend to have two sketches, one as a basic outline of the room with the body and distinguishable structures, or landmarks, along with the location of any items in the scene. The other is a much more detailed variant of the basic outline, providing the location of blood splatter, and to scale items.
They must make sure they know the proper distance between each item relative to the body and record that on the sketch. They also work with the photographer to document the exact location and direction from which each photograph was taken.
